Total Comp View

The 4 Rs of Compensation Strategy

Most organizations struggle to hire and retain talent — not because they don't spend enough, but because their compensation has no coherent system behind it.

The real problem: Too many organizations "just throw money at people" — no structured bonuses, no performance-linked incentives, no intentional recognition built into comp. The result is a revolving door that costs more than a well-designed strategy ever would.

Recruitment

Win the competition for talent before the offer letter is even signed. A well-structured total compensation package — base pay, variable pay, and benefits — signals to candidates that your organization is serious, well-run, and worth betting their career on.

Attract the right people with a compelling, differentiated offer

Retention

Keeping great people is a strategic asset. We design compensation structures that make leaving feel like a step backward — through competitive pay positioning, tenure-linked incentives, and total rewards that compound over time as the organization grows.

Stay ahead of competitors before your best people start looking

Reward

When the organization performs, the people who drove that performance should share in it. We build variable compensation plans — structured bonuses, gainsharing, and performance-linked incentives — that create a direct line between business outcomes and individual upside.

Share the upside when it's earned, in ways that reinforce the right behaviors

Recognition

Compensation is as much about how people feel as what they're paid. We help organizations build recognition into the fabric of their comp programs — so that rewards are delivered in ways that make people feel seen, valued, and motivated to keep performing.

Make people feel valued in ways that money alone can't accomplish

Sales Compensation: Why Intuition Fails

Equicomp Advisors has extensive experience designing sales compensation plans — which are famously counterintuitive. Most people assume a good way to increase sales of widgets is to double the commission rate paid on widgets. But that's also a great way to cut your sales of widgets in half while paying the same commissions: your company makes less money, and your sales reps make the same money while enjoying an improved work-life balance.

We are very familiar with these unintended consequences of well-intended compensation plans — and we would love to help you design a plan that actually accomplishes your business goals and results in better outcomes for your entire organization.

Need more than a subscription? For projects that call for more speed and implementation time — like a total review of all company comp plans or implementation of a commission system — we offer invoice-based project pricing. Tell us about your project →

1

Subscribe

Pick your plan and check out securely in minutes. Your membership — and the mutual NDA that protects everything you share — starts immediately, and a link to your private request board arrives by email moments after checkout.

2

Request

Add anything you need as a card on your board's Priority List — benchmarking a job description, a variable comp plan, an offer you need to win. When you're ready, drag a card into the Queue: that starts the delivery clock and notifies us. We always work the top card(s) next — one at a time, or two on Double Requests plans. And for quick questions, your weekly advisory time means you can just call or email. See popular requests →

3

Receive

Get a clear, defensible answer or deliverable within 6 business days (48 business hours) — or 3 business days (24 business hours) on Double Speed plans — backed by 800M+ HR-reported survey data points. We revise until you're confident.

How does the queue work?

Every member gets a private Trello board that only you and we can see — your invite arrives by email moments after you subscribe. Park ideas on your Priority List, then drag a card into the Queue when you're ready — that starts the delivery clock and notifies us. Drag cards to reorder anytime; if the Queue holds more than your subscription covers at once, we always work the top card(s) next — your plan's active card(s) carry a delivery due date right on the card, and the next card's clock starts automatically the moment a slot opens. Your card moves to In Progress while we work it, then to In Review when it's ready for your eyes — you'll get a notification — then to Done. See popular requests for ideas — and a 5-minute video walkthrough is pinned to the Start Here card on every member board.

Why a subscription instead of hourly billing?

Hourly billing punishes you for asking questions. A flat monthly rate means you can bring us every offer, promotion, and pay decision without watching a meter — and budget for compensation expertise the way you budget for software.

What counts as a request?

Anything within our advisory services: benchmarking a job description for a specific region, designing a variable comp plan, evaluating an existing plan, negotiating a competitive offer, pay equity checks, and more. Larger projects are simply broken into request-sized pieces, and quick questions usually fall under your weekly advisory time instead of taking a request slot. Browse the full request menu.

How does the weekly advisory time work?

Every membership includes weekly call, email, and Q&A time with your advisor — 1 hour per week on the Advisory Membership, 2 hours per week on every other plan — separate from your request queue. Say one of your employees has an offer from a competitor and you'd like to consult on a counter offer: pick up the phone or send an email, no request card needed. And if we reach out to you, that time never counts against your hours.

Need faster turnaround or more capacity?

Step up to Double Speed for 3-business-day (24-business-hour) delivery, Double Requests to run two requests at a time ($2,400/month each), or combine both with Double Speed, Double Requests at $4,800/month. Every plan above the core membership also doubles your weekly advisory time to 2 hours. Switch plans whenever your needs change.

What about projects too big for a request queue?

Some engagements need more speed and implementation time than a subscription provides — a total review of all company comp plans, or implementation of a commission system across your sales team. For those we offer invoice-based project pricing. Request a consultation and we'll scope it together.

What if I only need help some months?

Cancel anytime in the billing portal and resubscribe when the next comp cycle, offer, or reorg hits. There's no long-term contract, so you're never locked into months you don't need. You can also update your payment method there anytime.

How is my data protected?

Every membership is covered by our Mutual Nondisclosure Agreement from the moment you subscribe. Your pay data, personnel information, and financials stay strictly confidential.
